CLINICAL PEARLS FROM THE FACULTY reviewing the study safety data. Hypertension
The TIME study suggests that the timing of administration of
antihypertensive medications should be a shared decision-
making process between patients and clinicians to maximize
adherence.

SPECIAL POPULATIONS
Atrial fibrillation detection and management in hypertension.
Gawalko, A, Linz D. Hypertension. 2023 Mar;80(3):523-533.
Hypertensive patients have a 73% greater likelihood of atrial fibrillation (AF); uncontrolled hypertension is the most important
contributor to AF development. In turn, >70% of patients with AF have hypertension. This article aimed to review 1) the current
literature on AF detection and 2) the transition of early AF management in hypertensive patients.
Hypertension and AF share several risk factors (e.g., age/gender/race, genetics, obesity/overweight, sleep apnea, and others)
and pathophysiological mechanisms (e.g., hemodynamic changes, structural remodelling, and autonomic dysregulation).
Therefore, appropriate BP control is important for preventing incident AF.
